Abstract

The present thesis provides a serious philosophical analysis of the dualism of nature and man as posited in the philosophy of Sankhya. Sankhya philosophy is the oldest philosophy in the Indian philosophical tradition. In this philosophy, nature and man are accepted as two independent entities. Nature is inert, active and consequential, whereas man is conscious, passive and inconsequential. This dualism is not merely metaphysical, but of practical and spiritual significance. In this research work, after a detailed discussion of the Sankhyakarikas and commentaries, the nature, differences and relationship between nature and man have been explained. A discussion of realistic principles is presented with comparative tables.
